The wheels came off during the home stretch of the Austin Marathon for Kenyan elite Hyvon Ngetich.
Ngetich was leading with just a couple miles to go Sunday, but as you can see in the video below, she resorted to crawling down Congress Avenue to the finish line after her body shut down.
She ended up finishing third in 3:04:02. She was passed by second-place Hannah Steffan just seconds before crawling across the finish line.
Ngetich told MyFoxAustin afterward that she has little memory of the last 2K, though she refused help from nurses, who had a wheelchair ready for her.
“Running, always you have to keep going, going,” Ngetich said afterward.
Though it’s not a first (there are a few famous finish-line crawls from the Ironman World Championship, for starters), it was a new sight for race director John Conley.
“When she came around the corner on her hands and knees, I have never, in 43 years of being involved in this sport, have seen a finish like that,” Conley told MyFoxAustin.
Conley told the station that even though Ngetich was passed at the end and finished third, he would adjust the prize money to give her second-place money.
