They say they will do whatever it takes to assist the late runner’s children.
The Daily Nation is reporting that Kenya’s governing body of track and field, Athletics Kenya, has come to the assistance of the grieving Wanjiru family.
Apparently, Sammy Wanjiru’s four-year-old daughter, Ann, is not aware that her father is dead.” Dad went to town; he will come and take me to Japan,” she said.
On Tuesday, Athletics Kenya executives led by Vice President Jackson Tuwei visited the home of the recently deceased Olympic gold medalist in the marathon to offer their condolences. “We are very saddened by the loss of such a great talent, the first to bring Olympic marathon glory to us,” he said.
There to receive Tuwei was Wanjiru’s widow, Triza Njeri, as well as Wanjiru’s brother, Simon Njoroge, his agent Federico Rosa, the runner’s funeral organising committee chairman, Charles Kamathi, and more than 200 athletes from Nyahururu.
“We will provide all support and encouragement to see that Wanjiru’s family lives well,” Tuwei said. “He left behind very young children and we want them to grow just as he would have wished.”
Sammy Wanjiru passed away on May 15 after falling from a second-floor balcony at his residence.
