Alice Mogire Breaks Oporto Course Record

The Kenyan clocked 1:10:23 for the 13.1-mile distance.

There was some serious speed going on in the town of Oporto, Portugal last weekend. Alice Mogire dominated one of the most scenic races in Europe to win the Oporto Half Marathon. Her nearest rival, Ethiopia’s Ehitu Kiros Reda, was over a minute behind.

Third place went to Portugal’s own Leonor Carneiro who clocked 1:13:33.

After the first 10K, Mogire dropped the hammer and moved to first position. No one in the field could counter and she ended up setting a personal best.

In the men’s race Benson Barus of Kenya ran 1:01:44–a far cry from the blazing time that Zersenay Tadese ran on the same course last year when he set the course record.

Surprisingly, James Kwambai, who owns a sub-1 hour PR, was only able to muster a sixth-place showing with a relatively pedestrian 63:00.

Second place in the men’s division went to Bernard Kitur, 1:01:57, while third place was awarded to Evans Lagat Chebet.
