Former Boson Marathon champion tries to clarify a previous statement he made about Mo Farah.

Famous distance-running coach Alberto Salazar isn’t shy about giving his opinion on the sport.

He recently told Athletics Weekly’s David Cox in an interview that Ethiopian ace Kenenisa Bekele is the greatest distance runner in history.

Salazar shared this observation to clarify a statement he made last December in an interview with the BBC regarding the legacy of his athlete Mo Farah.

“I was asked about how I thought he [Farah] compared to others in history and I said that I thought what he did [in London] is as good as what anybody else has done,” he said. “Because other people have won those events [the 5000m and 10,000m at the Olympics], but Mo has done it in an era where it’s much more competitive to 20 or 30 years ago.”

Bekele’s top mark for the 5000m and 10,000m events are 12:37.35 and 26:17.53 respectively.

“Those times are awfully fast,” Salazar admits.
