American record holder in the mile will join Dathan Ritzenhein as the second athlete to join Salazar this summer.
Alan Webb, the current American record holder in the mile, has decided to leave his longtime coach, Scott Raczko, to join Alberto Salazar’s Nike Oregon Project in Portland, Ore. Webb has had a rough road since he set the American record of 3:46.91 back in 2007, having failed to qualify for the Olympics in 2008 and the World championships in 2009. Webb will join a stellar group assembled in Portland, including Dathan Ritzenhein, Galen Rupp and Adam Goucher. The likely scenario will see Webb move up in distance leading to the 2012 Olympics, as the Portland group is focused on athletes looking to excel at the 5000 through marathon distances. Webb has proven himself at the longer distances, having run 13:10.86 at 5000m in 2005 and 27:34.72 at 10,000m in 2006.
