The 400-kilometer run will help raise money for education projects in Ethiopia.

The 400-kilometer run will help raise money for education projects in Ethiopia.

Beginning on January 8, a small group of runners will take part in a 400K trek across Southern Ethiopia to generate awareness and funding for education. The “Run Across Ethiopia” is a project organized by a U.S.-based charity called On The Ground (OTG). The organization hopes to raise $100,000 for the charity, which will help build schools as fund other education projects in Ethiopia.

Additionally, funds will be used to support a group of 129 fair trade cooperatives.

The run starts out in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa. It then winds through the Great Rift Valley and up into the Ethiopian highlands.

A press conference will be held before the event featuring some of Ethiopia’s fastest runners. On the Ground is based out of Traverse City, Michigan. According to its Web site, the charity “is a nonprofit organization that provides access to fresh water, healthcare, and education in the fair trade farm communities where its partners source coffee beans and other products.”
