A Good Bet On Emmanuel Bett In Australia

The Kenyan won the 10,000m event at the Zatopek race.

Emmanuel Bett won the 52nd annual Zatopek 10,000m in Australia when he came across the line in 27:59.23. He had been targeting 27:22.54, the race record that is held by Luke Kipkosgei.

Last year, Bett won the same race, defeating rivals Bidan Karoki and Micah Kogo in the rain when he ran 27:39.33.

“It was fine while the pacemaker was in, but then I felt [the wind],” recalled Bett. “Maybe next year,” he said of the record.

Australia’s Ben St Lawrence took second behind Bett to capture his third title for his home country. Ben Moreau of England put forth a surprising effort to take third.

Meanwhile, in the women’s race, Neely Spence of the United States won in 32:16:51. The race was a debut at the distance for her. Besides Spence, only one American has won the Zatopek race before, Galen Rupp.
