84-Year-Old Cleveland Man Is Still Running

A Cleveland man started running more than 30 years ago and has since completed several marathons and ultramarathons.

Not all that groundbreaking, given the sport’s popularity these days.

But what is remarkable about the story is that the runner, Leo Lightner, is 84.

Now that’s something.

Lightner, whose nickname is, appropriately, “Forest Gump,” still competes in ultra-distance races at his age. In fact, he’s got a 24-hour race on his schedule for this fall.

“Just makes you feel better after a good run,” Lightner told News Channel 5.

Lightner said people always say he’s an inspiration when he sees them during his runs. Even more amazing is the fact that he’s had two mini-strokes.

“The legs aren’t working as well as they used to,” he said. “My performance has improved with time and patience.”

Lightner also doled out some advice to beginners just taking up the sport. He said base training at 20-25 miles per week is important, running is largely a mind game, and at the finish line of a race, look forward to your next race.

At the end of the day, Lightner said he doesn’t see himself stopping anytime soon.

“I hope when I pass away maybe I’m running,” he said. “I don’t want to stop.”
