4,500 Runners Register For 2014 Boston Marathon

18,000 time-qualifier slots remain, and the process continues on Wednesday.

On the first day of signups for the 2014 Boston Marathon, 4,500 runners were able to secure spots. That’s a higher number than usual on the first day of a multi-day process that sets the field for the world’s oldest annual marathon.

In total, 22,000 slots are available to time-qualifying runners, and Monday’s signup was only for those runners who bettered their qualifying time by at least 20 minutes. On Wednesday, runners who bested their qualifying times by at least 10 minutes are able to register, and those who broke the mark by at least 5 minutes can try to sign up on Friday.

“We are running less than a couple of thousand ahead of year-to-year (2013-to-2014),” B.A.A. spokesperson Jack Fleming told Runner’s World. “Better indicators will be on Wednesday when 10-minutes-and-faster qualifiers can submit their entry application, and of course on Friday when 5-minutes-and-faster qualifiers can submit their entry.”

If spots still remain after this week, runners who bested their qualifying time by any amount of time can submit an application to register starting next Monday. That registration period will be open through next Friday, Sept. 20. If spots are still open after that, runners who qualified can register on a first-come, first-served basis starting Sept. 23, and that will continue until the 22,000 slots are filled.
