100 Marathons, 7 Continents For Annapolis Runner
He's Maryland's own "Marathon Man."
He’s Maryland’s own “Marathon Man.”
The Baltimore Sun is shining some light on a deserving individual. His name is Steve Neibergal and when he crosses the finish line on June 29 at the Safaricom Marathon in Kenya, he will have completed something worthy of praise: his 100th marathon.
The 52-year-old Annapolis, Md. resident will also have completed seven marathons on seven continents.
He’s also completed a 26.2-mile race in all 50 states.
“I’m a very goal-oriented person,” Niebergal admits. This trait has paid off for him in other aspects of his life in that he’s risen to becoming the president of the Eastern division of Safeway.
“I always had a ‘bucket list’ goal to run a marathon,” he says. “But I thought training would be so intense that it would have to be a retirement thing.”
Niebergal has always been a runner. As a youth, he ran high school cross country and track.
He came across Hal Higdon’s marathon guide, which he says helped him with a 16-week marathon program.
