NAZ Elite Scott Fauble Shares Marathon Insight In New Book

Inside A Marathon is a new book by American distance runner Scott Fauble and his coach Ben Rosario of the Northern Arizona Elite (NAZ). In it, readers can gain insight into the world of competitive racing along with Rosario’s specific training plans that helped Fauble secure a 7th place finish (2:12.28) at this year’s TCS New York City Marathon.

“I’d like to believe readers can gain a whole host of things to use in their own training,” Rosario says. “Workouts are part of it for sure. We’ve had a lot of success in the marathon at Hoka NAZ Elite, and we share everything we do in terms of the nuts and bolts of training in Inside A Marathon. “

Throughout the book, Fauble also shares personal details about his life and his struggle with anxiety, fatigue and doubt which ultimately led to working with a sports psychologist. “His strategies to overcome those moments and come out as confident as ever on the other side are potentially the most useful pieces of information in the entire book,” Rosario says.

In June of 2018, the NAZ marathoner went to Rosario with the idea for the book and Rosario was quickly on board. As they trained, the pair worked together to shape the contents of the book while also hoping that their training would pay off on November 4. “We had both worked really hard on the book before the race even happened, but it wasn’t going to be interesting if I didn’t run well,” Fauble says. “All that work could have been for naught. No one wants to read a book about how we ran a mediocre marathon.”

Thankfully, Fauble made it into the Top 10 and was only one of three American men to do so that day. One of Rosario’s major goals in Fauble’s training plan was to challenge him in workouts that would include a lot of pace change runs such as:

  • 12 x 1 mile at 4:56/mile with a minute rest. Every fourth mile faster (4:50, 4:41, 4:34) at 6,500 ft. elevation
  • 26 miles with miles 20-24 at marathon effort

One particular difficult week after pacing the Chicago Marathon (18 miles at 5:02 pace), Fauble’s training led to a 26-mile run at 7,300 feet. Although tired, Rosario urged a quicker pace from miles 20-24 set at a 5:14 pace. It was this workout that was most telling to Rosario and a defining run for the athlete. “Given the context, to me that simulated what he’d be facing in the last few miles of New York City better than anything else we did,” Rosario said.
