The Drake Relays has done a lot of interesting promotions around Des Moines, Iowa, in recent years to keep local interest in the 105-year-old meet high. For this year’s meet, they put on a high jumping exhibition inside a Hy-Vee grocery store on April 21 in Waukee, Iowa. (Hy-Vee is the major sponsor of the meet again this year.) Apparently it took three hours to clear the fresh fruits and vegetables from the store’s produce department so the high jump equipment could be set up. What’s more impressive is that Olympic silver medalist Eric Kynard, one of the 10 professional high jumpers who ran through the store’s aisles on the approach to the bar, cleared 7 feet, 6 inches to win the event. The real high jump competition took place on April 26 at Drake Stadium. After you check out this video clip from CNN, watch a story about the pole vault competition being held inside Jordan Creek Mall in West Des Moines for the fifth straight year.)
