Former Champions Returning to Run the Boston Marathon

Some will run the full marathon, while others will participate in the B.A.A. 5K.

Several past champions will be back in New England to run in the 2015 Boston Marathon.

Joan Benoit Samuelson (1979, 1983), Gelindo Bordin (1990) and Amby Burfoot (1968) will run the prestigious race on April 20.

In addition, Greg Meyer (1983), Geoff Smith (1984, 1985), Morio Shigematsu (1965), Jaqueline Gareau (1980), Lisa Rainsberger (1985) and Lorraine Moller (1984) will participate in the B.A.A. 5K on Saturday, April 18.

Those champions, of course, are in addition to the past champions who are competing in the elite field that day, including Meb Keflezighi (2014), Wesley Korir (2012), Lelisa Desisa (2013), Sharon Cherop (2012) and Caroline Kilel (2011).

In addition to the race, the past winners will attend a Champions’ Breakfast the day before the race. There, several past champions will be honored at the anniversary of their win. That list includes Bill Rodgers, who won four times but will be honored for the anniversary of two of those wins—the 40th anniversary of his 1975 win and the 35th anniversary of his 1980 win.

Other past champions who will be in Boston for marathon weekend include Sara Mae Berman, Jack Fultz, Bobbi Gibb, Nina Kuscsik and Uta Pippig.
